The European Society of Aerospace Medicine has the pleasure to announce the sixth European Congress of Aerospace Medicine in the beautiful city of Prague in the heart of Europe. This congress is made possible due to the kind invitation of the Czech Society of Aviation Medicine (CZAAM) and the Czech Institute of Aviation Medicine.

As a result of the highly successful 5th ECAM held in Oslo, Norway in September 2016, the Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA) is pleased to continue the joint sponsorship with the ESAM and CZAAM of the 6th European Congress in Aerospace Medicine (6th ECAM). We are excited to be working with our ESAM and CZAAM colleagues to bring a high quality Aerospace Medicine Congress to Europe.

We hope many AsMA members that have not had the opportunity to attend one of the AsMA’s Annual Scientific Meetings in North America will be able to join us in Prague for an exciting continuing medical education event, the 6th ECAM!

The Scientific Program Committee decided on that the theme for ECAM 6 to be ‘Trust and Care for Aviation Safety – TCAS’. They are actively creating a captivating programme of sessions comprising of abstract presentations and panel discussions as well as poster presentations intended to bring to your attention the latest medical and technical developments as well as regulatory changes that may impact the field of aerospace medicine.

Features of the program include panel sessions on the following topics:

• Rules and Safety - 2 sides of the same coin
• Advances in Aeromedical Screening
• Contrasts and Lessons Learned: Military and Civilian Aerospace Medicine
• UAV Operations - Developments and Challenges
• AME Course/Workshop on AEMCs
• Aviation Psychology - Psychosocial Well-Being
• Psychological and Mental Health Assessments
• Special Senses and Orientation
• Space Flight: Physiology and Psychology

The Organisation Committee has found an ideal venue in Prague, the National House of Vinohrady, a Neo-Renaissance building close to the historical centre of this beautiful city and representative for the architecture of Prague.

Dear ESAM constituent organisations and fellow colleagues of Aerospace medicine in Europe,

As we are near the end of 2017, it is my pleasure to wish you all a Peaceful and enjoyable Christmas time. 2017 has been a year of learning from the success from the Oslo Conference in 2016 and planning for the congress in Prague In 2018. The theme of the Prague Congress will be “trust and care in Aviation Safety” - a theme that is both fitting and timely, as It points toward the role of our profession in supporting those who fly so that they may fly safe and fly well. In these times our role is under discussion, and it is imperative that we are in the center of bringing ideas forward in order to influence developments to the best for flight safety and the professional values we represent.

The current President of ESAM, Dr. Anthony S. Wagstaff, member of the Norwegian Association of Aviation Medicine, was elected as President-Elect. He accepted the new mandate and will continue to serve as President until 2020.

ESAM and EASA worked together to develop a guidance material for AME in order to explain the working relations of an AME involved in performing aero-medical assessments in the European aero-medical environment. The leaflet is expected to have as a result a more efficient working environment for AMEs in relation to the applicants on one hand and the competent authorities on the other hand. Additionally, we aim to support the implementation of a trust relationship and just culture in the AMEs working relations.
