ESAM, the representatives of EASA-MeSafe project and EPPSI have supported the Civil Aviation Authority of the Republic of Moldova in the organization of the Workshop on Mental Fitness of Aviation Personnel. This event was held on September 28-30, 2023, in Chisinau, Moldova.

The event united in Chisinau more than 60 specialists in aviation and aviation medicine (AMEs, medical assessors, psychologists, operational managers) from different states: Moldova, Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Netherlands, Norway, Belgium and Ireland. Participants shared the methods of assessment, treatment and safety management of the mental health conditions of the aviation personnel in order to ensure flight safety.

Experts from EASA-MeSafe Project presented data of the research that was done so far in diagnosis, treatment of mental health conditions which can pose a risk for aviation safety and would consequently lead to pilots’ and Air Traffic Control Officers’ unfitness.

Also, special attention was given to Peer Support Programs dedicated to civil aviation personnel from various countries.

High technologies improved the safety of contemporary aviation a lot, but the human factor remains the main reason for accidents. Pilots in all types of flying activities could experience classical physiological stresses in flight (hypoxia, barotrauma, acceleration, spatial disorientation).

This plays an even more important role in emergency situations when such conditions reduce the pilot’s performance and endanger the flight safety. Unlike the military cargo airplane pilots who receive the practical training along with the theoretical training in aviation physiology, civilian pilots study only the theory.

Dear Member Associations ,

Here is your Nomination Committee Chair again, this time with another request.

During our GA at the ICAM conference in Paris, we should also appoint a new Nomination Committee of 3 persons, and 2 new Auditors !

The actual ones were appointed at the congress in Prague and their replacement is overdue. It are not difficult tasks, for the Nominating Committee every year around this time the member associations must be reminded about the vote for a new President-Elect or a new Executive Committee (alternating) , the practical issues are handled by our webmaster and administrative assistant  ; for the auditors, at the GA they go through the (small) financial book-keeping together with our treasurer to check if it has been handled correctly.

These shall be elected for a period of two years. Any officer may seek re-election after a two-year term, but no member shall serve for more than six years except in exceptional circumstances, and as agreed by the General Assembly.” I have to emphasise that nominations can only be made by member associations who have paid their annual dues , and not by individuals.
