Read moreDear Brigitte, dear Vincent,
As President of ESAM I would like to express my deep sympathy for the tragic fire and damage to the Notre Dame recently. The fire struck at a symbol of faith, culture and beauty, not only for Europeans, but for the whole world. Of course the loss is greatest for all Parisians.
You and all our friends in SOFRAMAS are at the heart of ESAM, and I think I speak for all ESAM members when I say that we are all united in support for you all in our thoughts. Luckily, no lives were lost, and the Notre Dame will no doubt be be rebuilt to former glory.
Roland Vermeiren, founder member and previous President of ESAM, Head of Medical Service of EUROCONTROL, is this year the first President of the Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA) from continental Europe in their 90-year history.

Aerospace Medicine, as a broad field of endeavour, offers dynamic challenges and opportunities for physicians, nurses, physiologists, bio-environmental engineers, industrial hygienists, environmental health practitioners, human factors specialists, psychologists, physician assistants, and other professionals. The environments of space and aviation provide significant challenges, such as:
· Microgravity
· Radiation exposure
· G-forces
· Emergency ejection injuries
· Hypoxic conditions
The "NATO Occupational Aviation Cardiology Working Group” has produced 10 scientific papers on Aviation Cardiology after presenting 3 NATO panels in the last 3 years during AsMa meetings.
European specialists have been important in this work, which has substantial practical relevance for evaluation of both civilian and military air crew.

We are hoping, and believe, that teaming up in order to make the best possible conference in Aerospace Medicine will turn out to be a great success, scientifically and socially. Aviation is global by nature, and our collaboration is going very well. Therefore, The European Society of Aerospace Medicine (ESAM) and the International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine (IAASM), together with The Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA) are in the early stages of planning a 2nd (ICAM) in Europe in 2022.
Read moreThis was a lively and fruitful meeting, with discussions mainly centred at improving the communication with our member associations/societies and associates, and with the wider public. We established a working group with the task to develop a communication strategy, to find ways for ESAM to be more visible not only through its website but also by using popular social media channels.
Read moreEnd of January 2019 we received the sad news that Dr. Annette Ruge, our colleague for many, many years had passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. Most of us in the aero-medical community have been in close contact with her as a competent colleague, aero-medical specialist and member of the executive board of the German Society of Aerospace Medicine.
